Washington, DC?s Minority Media and Telecommunications Council (MMTC) will convene some of the nation?s most noted leaders on broadband policy, telecommunications, and social justice to discuss ?Creating Economic Opportunity through Digital Equality? at its 4th Annual Broadband & Social Justice Summit.

Wednesday, January 16

• Broadband: The Backbone of The New Economy
  • Industry leaders will discuss how telecom and broadband regulatory reform can advance jobs and economic opportunity, how the FCC can best react to market trends, and how the FCC should examine its rules to enable diversity and innovation while reducing barriers to entry. Speakers include Dean C. Garfield, president and CEO of the Information Technology Industry Council, and Bret Perkins, Vice President of External and Government Affairs with Comcast.

• Congressional Luncheon: Designing Telecom and Internet Policy for the Digital Age
  • Current and former members of Congress with telecom industry oversight responsibility will discuss whether new legislation is needed to drive technological change, jobs creation, innovation, and economic opportunity. Delegate Donna M. Christensen (D-U.S.V.I.), Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (D-NY), Former Congressmen Clifford Stearns (R-FL) and Edolphus Towns (D-NY) will lead the discussion, with a keynote address by telecom entrepreneur David J. Grain.

• How to Generate Diverse Participation in the Telecom and Internet Spaces

  • Industry and government leaders will discuss how to overcome political,procedural, and practical obstacles to telecom and broadband regulatory reform; the massive changes that have occurred in the telecommunications industry since?the passage of the 1996 Communications Act; and how industry, legislators, and?regulators could draft new legislation to ensure diversity and innovation in the information era.? The panel will feature FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell and NABOB Executive Director and General Counsel James Winston, among others.? NAACP General Counsel Kim Keenan will preside.

• 21st Century Vision for Universal Broadband Adoption

  • The FCC Chairman?s office will provide a top-level viewpoint on what is needed to realize the vision of universal broadband adoption and informed use, and suggests concrete initiatives on which stakeholders can work together to achieve common goals.? Speakers include Blair Levin, Telecommunications Policy Strategist Communications and Society Fellow with The Aspen Institute, and John Horrigan, Ph.D, Vice President and Director of the Media and Technology Institute at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.? Deborah Lathen, Former Chief of the FCC Cable Services Bureau, will preside.

• Obama Administration at the Mid-Point
  • Top broadband and telecom officials will share the latest developments in broadband, telecom, and Internet policy from the Obama Administration.? Panelists include?White House?Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Telecommunications Thomas C. Power and NTIA?Deputy Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information Policy and Deputy Administrator Anna M. Gomez.? ?Fletcher, Heald & Hildreth, PLC, Partner and MMTC Board Member Francisco Montero will preside.

• National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Hall of Fame Awards Induction and Ball
  • NABJ will pay homage to legendary black journalists who have made outstanding contributions to the industry, inducting six journalists into its Hall of Fame. BBSJ Summit attendees receive discounted tickets to the event.
