Movie Review: 'Life of Pi' ? CBS Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? No, not that kind of pie, even if it is Thanksgiving.

Life of Pi is director Ang Lee?s movie version of author Yann Martel?s fantastical tale about a shipwreck and a 16-year-old boy?s miraculous survival after more than seven months at sea while sharing a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger.

The oddly compelling book certainly seemed unfilmable to this reader?s eyes, yet Lee, the Oscar-winning director of Brokeback Mountain, somehow managed to pull it off with impressive results.? And while the movie has limitations resulting from its reverence for the source material, its ambition and quality are unmistakable.

The faithful screenplay by David Magee, based on Yartel?s 2001 novel, is about an Indian boy nicknamed Pi, played by newcomer Suraj Sharma, who is lost at sea after the ship carrying his zoo-owning family capsizes during a violent storm.

Everyone dies but Pi, who ends up on a small dinghy with an orangutan, a zebra, a hyena, a rat, and a tiger named Richard Parker.

Let?s just say that Pi?s ark will soon be a lot less crowded and that Pi and Parker are about to become unlikely traveling companions.

The boy-versus-beast narrative of Life of Pi is related in flashbacks as the adult Pi, played by the casually mesmerizing Irrfan Khan, relates his adventure at sea when he was much younger to a Canadian journalist (Rafe Spall) as he struggles with loss, hunger, thirst, despair, faith, loneliness, and, lest we forget, that imposing tiger.

Pi?s literal and spiritual journey across the Pacific Ocean is never less than visually striking although it was shot entirely on dry land inside huge water tanks in Taiwan.

But it is the footage of the tiger, and its seamless interaction with the human protagonist, that is perhaps the film?s most staggering achievement.? The vast majority of it is amazing computer-generated imagery while a few of the shots involve real tigers, but it is magically impossible to tell the difference.? For a director who took deserved heat for the shoddy CGI work in Hulk, this digital accomplishment must seem especially sweet to Lee.

Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Sense and Sensibility; The Wedding Banquet; Eat Drink Man Woman) obviously loves a challenge, and in this project he takes on and conquers three filmmaking no-no?s: working with animals, kids, and water.? To say nothing of 3-D.

As for the film?s celebrated ?3-D-ness,? it remains to these eyes an unnecessary accoutrement.? The spell that the beautifully-shot drama casts has little to do with that particular technological wrinkle, even if we do spend much of our viewing time absolutely marveling at just how Lee managed everything.

And yet, an exchange late in the game ? one that will not be revealed here ? offers a literary conceit that gives us pause and somewhat undermines the film?s hard-won sense of wonder.? Enough said.

So we?ll tame 3 stars out of 4 ? although we literal purists would much prefer to make it 3.14 out of 4 ? for a ravishing coming-of-age fable about, among other things, faith and the power and importance of storytelling.? Although there?s no hidden dragon in Life of Pi, the crouching tiger is a doozy.

HOUSTON (AP) ? Andre Johnson had the game of his life to save the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Johnson finished off a career day by turning a screen pass from Matt Schaub into a 48-yard sprint for the winning touchdown as the Texans rallied to beat Jacksonville 43-37.

"All the good teams find a way to win, no matter if it's ugly, pretty or whatever," Johnson said. "In the win column, it either says 'W' or 'L.' They don't ask how you got it done."

Schaub threw a career-high five touchdown passes, completed a franchise-record 43 passes and finished with 527 yards in the air, second most in NFL history. Warren Moon also threw for 527 yards for the Houston Oilers in December 1990 in Kansas City. Norm Van Brocklin holds the record with 554 for the Rams in 1951.

Johnson caught 14 passes for 273 yards, both career highs; the yardage was a team record. He turned 31 in July, but has been saying for weeks that he's feeling as fit and healthy as he ever has.

"Maybe you guys will believe me after that," Johnson told reporters after the game.

He seemed to be open all day and he was somehow uncovered again when Schaub flipped him the short pass for the decisive score.

"When I caught the ball, and I saw how open I was, I was looking around like, 'Where are the defenders at?'" Johnson said. "I took off running, I kept looking. I thought the cornerback would come from the outside, but he wasn't there. It was just the safety, so I was just saying to myself, 'I can't let him tackle me.'"

It almost didn't come to that. Houston trailed 34-20 with 12 minutes left, but Schaub completed 16 consecutive throws to launch the comeback.

"Something we can look back on as we move through this," Schaub said, "because there are going to be games like that, that are not always going to be a two- or three-score lead in the fourth quarter, where you're trying to run the clock out."

The Texans (9-1) won an overtime game for the first time at Reliant Stadium and improved to 2-7 in overtime in their history. The Jaguars (1-9) have lost three road games in overtime this year.

"I told them afterwards, we didn't come here for a tie," Jacksonville coach Mike Mularkey said. "We had some chances. We just did not make some of the plays that we haven't made throughout the year."

Houston's comeback wrecked big days by Chad Henne and first-round pick Justin Blackmon, who showed that the Jacksonville offense does actually have some spark.

Henne threw a career-high four touchdown passes in relief of injured Blaine Gabbert and Blackmon made seven catches for 236 yards. It was the first time in NFL history opposing players each had more than 200 yards receiving in the same game.

The Jaguars looked like they were on their way to one of the biggest upsets of the season when Henne hooked up with Blackmon for a stunning 81-yard touchdown with 12:33 left in regulation to put Jacksonville up 34-20.

Schaub then threw two touchdown passes to tight end Garrett Graham in the final 5:39 to force overtime.

Shayne Graham and Josh Scobee kicked field goals in overtime and, for a while, it looked like NFL would have its second tie in two weeks. San Francisco and St. Louis finished 24-24 last week.

Henne threw incomplete on fourth-and-10 from the Houston 47, and the Texans regained possession with 2:30 left in OT. Schaub saw the perfect defense for a receiver screen pass to Johnson, who took the pass and sprinted untouched down the right sideline to end it.

"We got what we wanted," Schaub said, "and 'Dre did the rest."

Johnson surpassed his own single-game records for receptions and yards receiving. Kubiak thinks those records may stand for a while.

"I don't know if that one will ever be touched," Kubiak said. "That was special from the Texans standpoint."

Gabbert left in the first quarter with a bruised right elbow. Mularkey said last week that he was sticking with Gabbert as his starter, but he may have to go with Henne now. He didn't have an update on Gabbert's injury after the game and will decide later whether to start Gabbert next week.

With Henne guiding the offense, Jacksonville had 238 yards by halftime.

"You've just got to always be prepared and ready to go in," Henne said. "I've been preparing these last couple weeks like I've got to be the starter, and any time he (Gabbert) goes down, just jump in and hopefully not lose a step."

Stating that Arunachal Pradesh is a ?unique? state with 26 major indigenous tribes and over 100s of sub tribes, the culture, language, customs and traditions of which are uniquely distinct from each other, Tuki urged them to enjoy the warm hearted tribal hospitality of the people during their stay in the state.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? John Gagliardi put sleepy little Collegeville, Minn., on the national college football map with a style all his own.

After 60 years at Division III St. John's, four national titles and more victories than any coach in NCAA history, Gagliardi is calling it a career at the tender age of 86.

"It's unbelievable that I could make a living with a career in a game that is so popular and is such a huge business," Gagliardi said Monday after announcing his retirement. "To be a small part of that has just been wonderful."

He played a much larger role than he lets on, shirking the conventions of the stereotypical overbearing college coach. More teddy bear than Bear Bryant, Gagliardi banned whistles, tackling and, essentially, bad weather during practice.

If the notoriously thick swarms of central Minnesota mosquitos were out for blood, the coach who only responded to "John" simply called it a day.

"It was working," Gagliardi said. "So I figured I'll keep doing it."

Gagliardi started coaching college players in 1949 and spent the past six decades at the private school in central Minnesota. He retires with a record of 489-138-11 and surpassed Eddie Robinson for the career coaching victories record in 2003.

To think of St. John's without Gagliardi in these parts is like trying to think of Duke without Coach K, the Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger, peanut butter without jelly.

"I can't imagine St. John's football without John Gagliardi on the sideline," said Tom Linneman, a Johnnies quarterback from 1996-2000. "I don't know what that looks like. And there are very few people alive that do know what it looks like."

The seemingly carefree approach in a sport that seems to demand so much more certainly didn't hold the Johnnies back once the games started. He won national titles in 1963, 1965, 1976 and 2003 and had managed to maintain the high expectations late into his tenure.

The Johnnies lost three games or fewer 13 straight seasons, from 1998-2010, and went undefeated in the MIAC five times in that span. But they had stumbled in the last two seasons, going 11-9 and getting dominated by rival St. Thomas both years.

"Nobody ever said that getting older was easy," Gagliardi said. "I just can't do the job at the level I used to anymore."

Gagliardi's coaching career began in 1943 when he was just 16. His high school coach at Trinidad Catholic in Colorado was drafted for World War II and Gagliardi, a team captain, took over and wound up coaching there and at St. Mary's High School in Colorado Springs for six years.

In 1949, he got his first college gig at Carroll College in Helena, Mont., leading the team to three conference titles in four seasons. He took the reins at St. John's in 1953, and piled up 27 conference titles, often upsetting his competition with a penchant for running up the score on overmatched opponents. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006; since 1993, the outstanding Division III player of the year has taken home the Gagliardi Trophy.

"Arguably, John Gagliardi has impacted the lives of as many young men as any individual in the history of Saint John's University," school President Michael Hemesath said. "His legacy of educating young men at Saint John's is one that any coach or professor would envy."

His retirement even drew praise from the White House with press secretary Jay Carney lauding Gagliardi's career and unique approach to the job.

"Even as his time on the gridiron comes to a close, Gagliardi's genuine concern for players as scholar athletes and human beings will ensure that his influence will be felt for years to come," the statement read.

"Maybe I ought to change my vote," Gagliardi quipped.

Gagliardi's 64 years were the most in college football coaching history, surpassing the record of 57 years held by former University of Chicago and University of the Pacific coach Amos Alonzo Stagg.

Linneman said Gagliardi's trust in his players ? he lets his quarterback call his own plays ? is what endeared the coach to his pupils more than the easy-going nature in practice or resistance to calisthenics.

"I can talk to a guy who graduated in 1953 and we can have a mutually agreeable conversation because we have the same stories," Linneman said. "That's amazing. You have 60 years of football players tied together by playing for the same coach. There's not a fraternity like Johnnies football."

On the quiet campus 80 miles northwest of Minneapolis, the bookstore sells T-shirts with pictures of Gagliardi throughout his coaching career and the word "Legend." There is no statue of Gagliardi on St. John's campus, which is nestled amid prairies, lakes and forest and encloses an abbey. Yet.

Gagliardi will remain on the staff until his contract expires June 30, 2013. The search process for his replacement begins immediately.

And Gagliardi has a search of his own to begin. He said he doesn't know what he's going to do without the job that has in many ways defined him for three quarters of his life.

"It's unchartered territory for me," Gagliardi said. "Who knows what I'm going to face?"

He is looking forward to getting up in the stands at Clemens Stadium to see the view he's been missing all these years.

"I'll get up there and know everything," he deadpanned, "just like the fans always seem to do."

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Oil major BP Plc , shut out of pre-qualification bidding to develop Abu Dhabi's largest onshore oil fields, is hopeful it can be included in the process and is waiting to hear soon on the issue, Chief Executive Bob Dudley said on Sunday.

"I'm positive about it ... I'm optimistic that cooperation will go on for a long time," Dudley said on the sidelines of an oil and gas event in the UAE capital, adding that he hopes to hear about the concessions "in the next week or so".

Industry sources had told Reuters in August that BP, which holds a 9.5 percent stake in the ADCO concession that is coming up for renewal in 2014, would not be allowed to participate in the pre-qualification process due to the United Arab Emirates' irritation over UK policies.

"We never knew we were excluded and I think the spirit and the feeling of the communications that we have is positive and we have been talking at multiple levels on this," Dudley said.

Asked if British Prime Minister David Cameron's visit to the UAE last week had made a difference for BP's future over the concessions, Dudley said: "I think David Cameron has been a great advocate for British business in general in a broad sense so it was good to see him here in Abu Dhabi."

Cameron visited the UAE last week as part of a wider trade and diplomacy tour of the Gulf. Lucrative arms deals were a main topic of discussion, as well as British efforts to balance concerns over human rights issues in Gulf states, which have struggled to contain protests inspired by the Arab Spring.

ADNOC OPTS FOR UNCHANGED STRUCTURE

Cameron's visit came as oil majors operating in OPEC member UAE brace for a decision from Abu Dhabi on the oil and gas concessions.

The concessions system allows oil and gas producers to acquire equity in hydrocarbons from the OPEC member in return for investing in projects.

On Sunday, Abu Dhabi National Oil Co's (ADNOC) director-general said ADNOC preferred to maintain the current structure of concessions in the United Arab Emirates and that it would present its recommendation to the Supreme Petroleum Council of Abu Dhabi (SPC) by early next year at the latest.

"It is our recommendation to have the same format. But this will be submitted to the SPC and they can decide if they want to change," Abdulla Nasser Al-Suwaidi told reporters on the sidelines of an oil and gas conference. "Submission is going to be late this year or early next year."

Some big oil companies, notably ExxonMobil , have expressed their discomfort about the concession structure. They are concerned about operating side by side with rivals in an ADNOC-controlled concession, with all partners expected to share their own technology.

The SPC is the highest authority responsible for the petroleum affairs in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which has the largest share of the UAE's oil and ambitious plans to invest $60 billion over the next five years to boost oil production capacity to 3.5 million barrels per day (bpd), from 2.7 million.

Oil concessions which lie at the heart of these plans have been under the spotlight since early last year as the date for the renewal of the biggest field with 1.5 million bpd capacity approaches.

As a child, growing up in the ?70s and still feeling the nearness of the civil rights movement of the ?60s, I believed that as time progressed America would become more and more open as a society and less prejudiced against people who are different from ourselves.

But, in his new book, Race-Baiter, media critic Eric Deggans calls into question my assumption that in America intolerance and narrow-mindedness are on a slow, but constant decline.

Instead, in an interview with Neal Conan on NPR?s Talk of the Nation, he suggests that modern media outlets, including 24-hour news programs, reality TV and even scripted television exploit prejudice and bias to build audience and sell advertising.

Part of the problem stems from our inexperience in talking about race, says Linda Tropp, who studies perceptions of racial differences. She contends that race is a taboo topic in our society.? As a result, we lack sophistication when we broach the topic and conversations about race provoke more anxiety than necessary.

The media only widens the divide.? Unlike in the past, when there were a few television stations that had to appeal to a wide swath of Americans, we now have hundreds of media outlets, each motivated to appeal to a certain societal niche.

Deggans suggests that television stations and other media outlets are motivated to appeal to only a certain segment of the population ? the segment that is most interested in what they are presenting. To gain and keep an audience, the media draws people in and encourages them to reject their competitors.? Intolerance of other viewpoints, stereotypes and bias are commonly used to achieve this goal.

We?d all like to think that we are savvier consumers than that.? And ultimately, the solution to these divisions might be that we increase our awareness of the biases surrounding us.

At the same time, it?s essential to understand that no matter who you are, if you are exposed to situations that don?t accurately reflect reality, you become biased in your views.? For example, if you watch the national news and see several stories in which African-Americans commit crimes against Caucasian women, you may develop a faulty belief that all African-Americans are dangerous to women.? If you repeatedly hear opinion represented as fact, you will begin to believe those attitudes, often even in the face of contradictory facts.

We don?t become biased because we are weak.? It is simply how our brains are wired to work.

Deggans suggests that we need to restart the conversation about our differences in a nonthreatening way that might achieve something.? He recommends setting boundaries before beginning these types of conversations.? For example, one boundary might be not to engage in attacks.

Talking about race and culture is vital to understanding each other, says Deggans.? Everyone must feel they can be a part of the conversation, but the conversation must be conducted with sensitivity and openness.

Judge throws out Apple lawsuit against Motorola (and Google)

The patent battle between Apple and Google (by way of Motorola) just keeps on going. Apple and Google were set to square off in the courtroom today in Wisconsin over allegations that Motorola's patent licensing practices were unfair. Fortunately -- for our collective sanity, if nothing else -- the case has been thrown out by the federal judge assigned to the suit. A spokeswoman for Google had this to say about Google's patent licensing practices:

"Motorola has long offered licensing to our extensive patent portfolio at a reasonable and non-discriminatory rate in line with industry standards." 

The suit was thrown out with prejudice, which means that it is overturned at the trial court level, but you can bet we'll see Apple appeal this decision as soon as possible. Unfortunately, this is likely far from over.

The Way I See it: Growing a healthy community

I love the domino effect of ideas being generated and a recent story in The Morning Star about Predator Ridge and the tourism brochure led to thinking about Sparkling Hill and what a great place that is as well, which led to Vernon becoming known as a health centre.

That leads to numerous discussions about how we have so many great healthy services and outdoor recreation areas, hotels, etc. and we could link them together into packages for visitors seeking healthy tourism events.

These include the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy, naturopathic physicians, day spas, massage therapists, acupuncture, reiki, reflexology, nutritionists and numerous other alternative health services. Add to this our bountiful agriculture industry from the organic gardens and orchards to the poultry, meat and natural health food stores. We are living in a fabulous natural healthy community.

There is more and more research showing the benefits of alternative health care in complement with traditional health care. So is there a way to package more of these together for visitors and locals to enjoy and learn from?? Sparkling Hill stands on its own or could be in combination with many others, where guests staying at a resort, hotel, motel, B and B could select a package of services for a healthy retreat weekend or week or an entire month.

Included could be the services of spa, alternative medicine, and adding in hikes, walks, in our beautiful parks, swims in our lakes, paddle boarding, kayaking, skiing, snow shoeing and more. Design your own or let someone guide you. Visits to the market, etc. Could just have ideas of how to spend a few healthy days in the North Okanagan with suggestions of visits to farmers markets, spas, hikes, nutritionists, etc. Maybe workshops could be tied in to the settings, throw in some cultural events to feed the soul and we have it all. As you can see ideas flow easily once people get started.

A niece recently visited Boston for her birthday and her special gift was that she bought a 15 km run with a local who explained the city and the history to her as they ran through the city. She has paid for this service in New York and San Francisco as well. I know we have the mural walking tours but I was wondering about adding to it for guided hikes. Of course insurance will be the dark cloud above all of it but I wonder about our local hikers guiding others. Or maybe pointing in the right direction.

Is there an opportunity for some local businesses to enhance their businesses by working together?? Possibly.

This is a great community because of so many super services and our natural beauty. Off topic a bit but another great service is the Okanagan Science Centre. This week I volunteered at the haunted house for one night and had a blast! That spooky house is fabulous and is a very creative fundraiser.

This coming week Sutton Realty is having their ?warm and fuzzy? clothing drive and looking for coats, jackets, mitts, scarves, hats, clothing for the cold winter months ahead that will be distributed to local groups through the Gateway Shelter and Howard House. You can do a drive- through drop-off on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the office.

As a community we can become healthier, starting at home. We can challenge ourselves to become healthier, set goals of increased hours of physical activity, weight loss, enjoying 100 mile diets and more.

Connecting into our community by volunteering is part of our overall good health and helps us with our sense of belonging.

All together it will be impressive, start at home, than work, your clubs. And get healthier? for bragging rights, not TV rights. We will all be better for it.
