BP CEO hopeful on taking part in UAE oil bidding
ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Oil major BP Plc
"I'm positive about it ... I'm optimistic that cooperation will go on for a long time," Dudley said on the sidelines of an oil and gas event in the UAE capital, adding that he hopes to hear about the concessions "in the next week or so".
Industry sources had told Reuters in August that BP, which holds a 9.5 percent stake in the ADCO concession that is coming up for renewal in 2014, would not be allowed to participate in the pre-qualification process due to the United Arab Emirates' irritation over UK policies.
"We never knew we were excluded and I think the spirit and the feeling of the communications that we have is positive and we have been talking at multiple levels on this," Dudley said.
Asked if British Prime Minister David Cameron's visit to the UAE last week had made a difference for BP's future over the concessions, Dudley said: "I think David Cameron has been a great advocate for British business in general in a broad sense so it was good to see him here in Abu Dhabi."
Cameron visited the UAE last week as part of a wider trade and diplomacy tour of the Gulf. Lucrative arms deals were a main topic of discussion, as well as British efforts to balance concerns over human rights issues in Gulf states, which have struggled to contain protests inspired by the Arab Spring.
ADNOC OPTS FOR UNCHANGED STRUCTURE
Cameron's visit came as oil majors operating in OPEC member UAE brace for a decision from Abu Dhabi on the oil and gas concessions.
The concessions system allows oil and gas producers to acquire equity in hydrocarbons from the OPEC member in return for investing in projects.
On Sunday, Abu Dhabi National Oil Co's (ADNOC) director-general said ADNOC preferred to maintain the current structure of concessions in the United Arab Emirates and that it would present its recommendation to the Supreme Petroleum Council of Abu Dhabi (SPC) by early next year at the latest.
"It is our recommendation to have the same format. But this will be submitted to the SPC and they can decide if they want to change," Abdulla Nasser Al-Suwaidi told reporters on the sidelines of an oil and gas conference. "Submission is going to be late this year or early next year."

The SPC is the highest authority responsible for the petroleum affairs in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which has the largest share of the UAE's oil and ambitious plans to invest $60 billion over the next five years to boost oil production capacity to 3.5 million barrels per day (bpd), from 2.7 million.
Oil concessions which lie at the heart of these plans have been under the spotlight since early last year as the date for the renewal of the biggest field with 1.5 million bpd capacity approaches.

As a child, growing up in the ?70s and still feeling the nearness of the civil rights movement of the ?60s, I believed that as time progressed America would become more and more open as a society and less prejudiced against people who are different from ourselves.
But, in his new book, Race-Baiter, media critic Eric Deggans calls into question my assumption that in America intolerance and narrow-mindedness are on a slow, but constant decline.
Instead, in an interview with Neal Conan on NPR?s Talk of the Nation, he suggests that modern media outlets, including 24-hour news programs, reality TV and even scripted television exploit prejudice and bias to build audience and sell advertising.
Part of the problem stems from our inexperience in talking about race, says Linda Tropp, who studies perceptions of racial differences. She contends that race is a taboo topic in our society.? As a result, we lack sophistication when we broach the topic and conversations about race provoke more anxiety than necessary.
The media only widens the divide.? Unlike in the past, when there were a few television stations that had to appeal to a wide swath of Americans, we now have hundreds of media outlets, each motivated to appeal to a certain societal niche.
Deggans suggests that television stations and other media outlets are motivated to appeal to only a certain segment of the population ? the segment that is most interested in what they are presenting. To gain and keep an audience, the media draws people in and encourages them to reject their competitors.? Intolerance of other viewpoints, stereotypes and bias are commonly used to achieve this goal.
We?d all like to think that we are savvier consumers than that.? And ultimately, the solution to these divisions might be that we increase our awareness of the biases surrounding us.
At the same time, it?s essential to understand that no matter who you are, if you are exposed to situations that don?t accurately reflect reality, you become biased in your views.? For example, if you watch the national news and see several stories in which African-Americans commit crimes against Caucasian women, you may develop a faulty belief that all African-Americans are dangerous to women.? If you repeatedly hear opinion represented as fact, you will begin to believe those attitudes, often even in the face of contradictory facts.
We don?t become biased because we are weak.? It is simply how our brains are wired to work.
Deggans suggests that we need to restart the conversation about our differences in a nonthreatening way that might achieve something.? He recommends setting boundaries before beginning these types of conversations.? For example, one boundary might be not to engage in attacks.
Talking about race and culture is vital to understanding each other, says Deggans.? Everyone must feel they can be a part of the conversation, but the conversation must be conducted with sensitivity and openness.

Judge throws out Apple lawsuit against Motorola (and Google)
The patent battle between Apple and Google (by way of Motorola) just keeps on going. Apple and Google were set to square off in the courtroom today in Wisconsin over allegations that Motorola's patent licensing practices were unfair. Fortunately -- for our collective sanity, if nothing else -- the case has been thrown out by the federal judge assigned to the suit. A spokeswoman for Google had this to say about Google's patent licensing practices:
"Motorola has long offered licensing to our extensive patent portfolio at a reasonable and non-discriminatory rate in line with industry standards."
The suit was thrown out with prejudice, which means that it is overturned at the trial court level, but you can bet we'll see Apple appeal this decision as soon as possible. Unfortunately, this is likely far from over.

The Way I See it: Growing a healthy community
I love the domino effect of ideas being generated and a recent story in The Morning Star about Predator Ridge and the tourism brochure led to thinking about Sparkling Hill and what a great place that is as well, which led to Vernon becoming known as a health centre.
That leads to numerous discussions about how we have so many great healthy services and outdoor recreation areas, hotels, etc. and we could link them together into packages for visitors seeking healthy tourism events.
These include the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy, naturopathic physicians, day spas, massage therapists, acupuncture, reiki, reflexology, nutritionists and numerous other alternative health services. Add to this our bountiful agriculture industry from the organic gardens and orchards to the poultry, meat and natural health food stores. We are living in a fabulous natural healthy community.
There is more and more research showing the benefits of alternative health care in complement with traditional health care. So is there a way to package more of these together for visitors and locals to enjoy and learn from?? Sparkling Hill stands on its own or could be in combination with many others, where guests staying at a resort, hotel, motel, B and B could select a package of services for a healthy retreat weekend or week or an entire month.
Included could be the services of spa, alternative medicine, and adding in hikes, walks, in our beautiful parks, swims in our lakes, paddle boarding, kayaking, skiing, snow shoeing and more. Design your own or let someone guide you. Visits to the market, etc. Could just have ideas of how to spend a few healthy days in the North Okanagan with suggestions of visits to farmers markets, spas, hikes, nutritionists, etc. Maybe workshops could be tied in to the settings, throw in some cultural events to feed the soul and we have it all. As you can see ideas flow easily once people get started.
A niece recently visited Boston for her birthday and her special gift was that she bought a 15 km run with a local who explained the city and the history to her as they ran through the city. She has paid for this service in New York and San Francisco as well. I know we have the mural walking tours but I was wondering about adding to it for guided hikes. Of course insurance will be the dark cloud above all of it but I wonder about our local hikers guiding others. Or maybe pointing in the right direction.
Is there an opportunity for some local businesses to enhance their businesses by working together?? Possibly.
This is a great community because of so many super services and our natural beauty. Off topic a bit but another great service is the Okanagan Science Centre. This week I volunteered at the haunted house for one night and had a blast! That spooky house is fabulous and is a very creative fundraiser.
This coming week Sutton Realty is having their ?warm and fuzzy? clothing drive and looking for coats, jackets, mitts, scarves, hats, clothing for the cold winter months ahead that will be distributed to local groups through the Gateway Shelter and Howard House. You can do a drive- through drop-off on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the office.
As a community we can become healthier, starting at home. We can challenge ourselves to become healthier, set goals of increased hours of physical activity, weight loss, enjoying 100 mile diets and more.
Connecting into our community by volunteering is part of our overall good health and helps us with our sense of belonging.
All together it will be impressive, start at home, than work, your clubs. And get healthier? for bragging rights, not TV rights. We will all be better for it.
